On 1 Aug 2003 at 12:19:25 PT users reported that ebaY was running very slowly. At 12:31:36 PT, users reported that ebaY had added a "My Recently Viewed Items." to the seller's page. At 16:13:36 PT, buyers reported that the descriptions on auction listings were not showing. At 19:30:05 PT, sellers reported they could not list items, as they could not choose a sub category. At 19:36:28 PT, buyers complained that the site was running so slowly, they were not able to search and buy. At 20:08:02 PT,sellers complained that the changes to the categories prevented the subcategories from showing, stopping their ability to list. At 20:15:34 PT more sellers reported that they could not list do to problems with the subcategories. At 21:47:35 PT, users reported that the view seller's other items function was returning several items as currently unavailable, even though the items were current. At 22:06:50 PT, sellers reported that Turbo Lister was crashing their computer.

On 2 Aug 2003 at 07:12:19 PT sellers reported they were not able to leave feedback on completed store sales. The site would not recognize the item number. At 07:32:48 PT, sellers reported they could not download Turbo Lister and get it to work. At 09:41:17 PT, users reported they were having problems with search. The search results would show several pages of results, but no active items would show, though completed items were available. At 14:23:59 PT, users trying to access their feedback received 562 Server Errors. The problem appeared to be AOL related. At 19:20:07 PT users trying to send messages on closed auctions, through the ebaY email system kept getting bounce backs with the messages showing as undeliverable. At 20:04:07 PT users reported that attached to the 'My Recent Page Views' was an additional link to View Similar Items'. This link was a direct violation of ebaY's policy of advertising other items on the paid for sellers page.

On 3 Aug 2003 at 7:03:29 PT, buyers reported that listings were missing their descriptions, and the listing had a link that said click here to view the description, but the link was dead. At 10:18:07 PT, sellers reported they could not list items using SYI2.0 receiving messages that the listing could not be completed. At 10:39:25 PT, users reported problems with page reloads, with the pages loading slowly or timing out, or returning page cannot be found messages. These problems continued to be reported through 10:50:53 PT. At 19:00:25 PT buyers reported that the ask seller a question feature was not working properly, as it would not accept the users password. At 19:12:26 PT, sellers reported that Turbo Lister was not working, returning messages that Turbo Lister could not connect to ebaY. At 21:18:02 PT, users reported that the ask seller a question feature was not working with AOL.

On 4 Aug 2003 at 17:27:28 PT, a seller reported that they received an "item not sold" email from ebaY. When they clicked on the link to relist the item, they could not relist it because the item had not yet closed. The item had actually closed and was available for relist. At 18:25:18 PT, users reported that ebaY had removed the see similar items link from the seller's listings, claiming this was an error in coding and was not meant to be on the seller's paid for page. At 18:32:49 PT, users reported having problems signing in, with the sign in not holding from page to page.

On 5 Aug 2003 at 04:48:02 PT, buyers trying to send emails to sellers using the ebaY system had those messages bounced back. It appears that something in ebaY's coding was scrambling the seller's email address. At 07:30:17 PT, more users reported that emails sent to sellers with AOL accounts were bouncing. At 07:41:35 PT, users reported that they could not switch from one account to another when accessing My ebaY pages. At 07:47:18 PT, sellers trying to use the Second Chance Offer feature could not send an email to the back up bidder through the ebaY email system, as it was not working. At 08:10:33 PT, sellers reported that they could not add images to auction listings using SYI2.0. At 08:35:21 PT, sellers reported they were not receiving end of auction emails. At 09:09:48 PT, buyers reported that though they placed bids, they did not get bid confirmation pages on any of the bids, instead returning, "This page cannot be displayed" messages. At 20:54:46 PT, buyers continued to report that emails sent through the ebaY system were bouncing back, preventing communication with sellers. At 21:06:36 PT, users trying to search on ebaY reported getting different results searching for the same item but using different browsers, the only variable.

On 6 Aug 2003 At 09:56:54 PT, users reported that search was not working. Only search by item number was working. At 12:16:51 PT, buyers continued to report that search was not working. For example, searching for Steelcraft resulted in (first try) Network Error Unable to read URL from host search.ebay.com: Connection reset by peer (second try) Your search returned too many listings. Please refine your search by adding more words in the search box. (For example, "fountain pen" instead of "pen".) You can also try searching within one of the categories below. At 12:17:29 PT, buyers trying to search received, "Network Error Unable to read URL from host search.ebay.com: Connection reset by peer" messages. At 12:50:51 PT, the problems with search continued to be reported by buyers.

On 7 Aug 2003 at 13:27:27 PT, users trying to sign in on the chat boards were not allowed access, with the sign in looping back to itself. At 19:48:22 PT, buyers reported that they could no longer delete watched items from their My ebaY page. There were also problems with bid attempts returning invalid page item not found messages. At 20:43:27 PT, users reported that they could not leave feedback for ebaY users who have an email address as a user ID. At 23:06:31 PT, sellers reported that they could not get past the page to select the shipping calculator, preventing them from listing.

On 8 Aug 2003 at 08:19:06 PT, users reported they were not getting end of auction notices. At 10:59:39 PT, users continued to report problems with sending email through the ebaY system to other users with AOL accounts. At 11:52:55 PT, users reported that clicking on the feedback number yielded a blank page, and the user would have to refresh several times to finally get the page to come up. At 11:57:58 PT, users reported that the sign in was not holding. They also reported they could not leave feedback getting messages that feedback had already been left, or that the item did not exist, even though the link was from the item page. At 16:32:29 PT, users reported that search by bidder was not working properly. Sometime the search would bring up item from 2001, and most searches were returning inaccurate results. At 17:42:51 PT, users reported they could not sign in to My ebaY. At 17:20:12 PT, users reported that the site pages were loading very slowly, often coming up blank. Other users reported at 17:21:08 PT that they had been getting blank pages intermittently throughout the day.

On 9 Aug 2003 at 8:37:59 PT, users reported problems with the ebaY spyware/scumware toolbar, not working after being downloaded. At 09:14:20 PT, buyers reported they could not view gallery images, or the preview images in normal search. They would have to select view images for every page downloaded. At 12:07:41 PT, users reported that ebaY page downloads were very slow or timing out before downloading, despite the users having broadband connections. At 16:21:33 PT, users reported that the "Click the View purchases button to pay for these items" button on the ended auction page took the user to the seller's bid history page, which then lead nowhere. At 17:41:27 PT, sellers reported that once again their gallery images were not showing, replaced by the text image that says: "Click here to see the photo". At 23:25:49 PT, users reported they were having a hard time navigating anywhere on ebaY, and that search was down.

On 10 Aug 2003 At 09:01:28 PT, users of the ebaY spyware toolbar reported that not all the features were showing when they tried to use it. The toolbar was missing the bid alert icon, the watching icon, the sign in icon etc. The only icons showing were search, My ebaY, and top picks. Sellers reported that PayPal payments were showing as paid, when the item had not been paid for, and that it was very unreliable indicator of payment. At 10:33:35 PT, sellers reported that buyers were making multiple purchases when they thought they were making only one. This appears to be happening because once the buyer hits the bid or buy button, they are skipped over the confirm page right to the purchased page. Sometime ebaY automatically enters more than one item, and the buyer has no opportunity to correct the error. This problem also causes buyers to accidentally do a BIN when they meant to bid. At 10:39:11 PT, more users reported they were having problems with the ebaY spyware toolbar. At 10:52:17 PT, users reported that ebaY partner Andale, was having problems with their image hosting service and with their counters. At 11:35:02 PT, users reported that the images and descriptions were missing from item listings. They would get a message that says, "To view this page with description, click here", but that link leads nowhere. Users reported the help feature was not working. At 15:11:40 PT, users continued to report problems with the ebaY spyware toolbar, this time getting redirected every time they attempt a download. At 19:59:42 PT, buyers reported that clicking on the search button yielded a blank page. At 20:34:59 PT, sellers continued to report Andale's site and counters down. At 21:06:50 PT, Andale announced they were doing some emergency maintenance. At 21:32:46 PT, title and description search returned site unavailable messages.

On 11 Aug 2003 at 5:11:06 PT, sellers continued to report that Andale's counters were still not working. At 09:33:30 PT, sellers were being told to update Turbo Lister, but when they tried to, they received a message that the program could not communicate with ebaY. At 11:59:49 PT, buyers reported that search pages were so slow in loading they were unusable, preventing the buyers from making purchases. At 14:30:35 PT, sellers reported the ebaY calculator was not working properly, giving buyers the wrong shipping cost. At 15:18:12 PT, ebaY users reported they could not leave feedback, getting messages that the items were invalid transactions, even though that was not the case. At 17:16:40 PT, users across the site received messages that search and listings were temporarily unavailable. At 18:08:45 PT, more users reported they could not access ebaY pages. At 18:30:01 PT, users reported that whilst trying to access the feedback system, cgi2 was timing out yielding a blank page. At 18:47:00 PT, ebaY posted that some sort tabs, such as Going Going Gone, were not returning the correct results. At 20:08:25 PT, users trying to access ebaY received server not found errors. At 22:30:34 PT, more users reported having access problems, with pages loading slowly and timing out. My ebaY pages took over 4 minutes to load using a DSL connection.

On 12 Aug 2003 at 01:42:10 PT, buyers trying to access their favorites page from My ebaY had the pages timing out. Clicking on a search yielded a blank page and a 'wrong parameter' message. At 04:49:55 PT, users reported that Andale was back up after several days of outages, but the counters were still not working correctly. At 05:43:23 PT, users reported that ebaY page loads were very slow. At 05:47:15 PT, a user reported that ebaY had given their User ID to another user, with the other users bids showing up on their account. ebaY confirmed that there were 2 addresses connected to the one ID. This was not a case of hacking, but of ebaY giving out a user ID that was already taken. AT 06:36:49 PT, users reported they were not receiving 'end of auction' notifications. At 06:59:25 PT, users reported that the Andale counters were now forcing cookies to view the counter results. At 10:35:04 PT, sellers reported they were still having problems communicating with their AOL customers. In addition, AOL users are not receiving automated emails from ebaY such as end of auction notices. At 11:40:31 PT, users who run spyware blocking programs reported they could not search ebaY, as ebaY's mediaplex double click partners try to implant so much spyware on users of the site. At 13:46:14 PT, Gianni@ebaY acknowledged that AOL users were not receiving emails from ebaY or those sent through the ebaY system. He said, "Actually, yes, eBay is aware of this and we are working with AOL and other ISPs to help get these emails through to the appropriate members. It hasn't been an easy process, but we are working on it. We ask for your patience while we try to get this situation resolved." So, though ebaY is fully aware they are having a problem that impacts hundreds of thousands of users, they have no posts about it on their announcement boards, once again lying by omission. At 15:51:36 PT users reported that the dollar amounts on their My ebaY pages had suddenly changes from £s to $, as they were rerouted to the US site though they were using the UK site. At 16:59:55 PT, sellers again reported their ebaY partnered Andale counters were not working, showing up blank or not at all. At 17:08:19 PT, users reported they could not get search to work properly. At 17:09:26 PT, more buyers reported they were getting sporadic and variable search results searching on the same keywords. At 20:17:53 PT, sellers reported that items submitted via Turbo Lister were listing with the wrong starting price such as items with a starting bid of $8. listed at $80 instead.

On 13 Aug 2003 6:14:06 PT, sellers reported that they were having trouble with the free ebaY counters. At 09:02:58 PT, users reported that when they searched for sellers who had changed their IDs via the sellers old ID, they received invalid ID messages. This was happening when the old ID was an email address ID or a non email address ID. At 12:59:21 PT users continued to report trouble with the ebaY free counters. At 13:26:28 PT, users reported that sign in was not holding requiring repeated sign ins. At 14:35:37 PT, users reported that they could not get the back button to work, and return to the previous page they were viewing, after doing a search or from the favorites page in My ebaY. At 16:13:47 PT, buyers noted that search was not working properly, and items that should appear on a search, weren't. Keywords in the title were not bringing the item up on title search, and the item could only be found by item number. At 16:44:04 PT, buyers trying to bid on items were taken directly from the bidding page back to the auction page, without the bid confirmation page showing. At 16:48:27 PT, buyers were receiving errors on the bidding page. At 17:47:19 PT, buyers trying to bid received messages that the search and listings system was down, and that buyers should either try again later, or search by item number. At 19:59:20 PT, sellers could not list items, as trying to submit an item resulted in a message saying the item could not be processed. At 20:11:29 PT, buyers continued to receive messages that the search and listing system was down. Users reported at 21:06:34 PT that the homepage was showing HTML coding at the top, including several javascript URLs to altfarm.mediaplex.com.

On 14 Aug 2003 at 06:15:20 PT, users reported that ebaY pages were downloading so slowly, they could not use the site. The URLs that were slowest were those with pics.ebay.com and thumbs.ebay.com in the URL. At 06:59:10 PT, users reported that pages were not reloading. At 07:01:54 PT, users reported that their attempts to post on the ebaY chat boards resulted in error messages. At 08:49:16 PT, sellers reported that they were having problems getting ebaY's free counters, provided by Andale, to load. At 10:45:38 PT, users reported that auction item pages were not downloading and that "waiting for reply from ebay" flashes across the bottom of the page. This made it impossible to bid on items. At 11:23:37 PT, sellers reported that they could not get images to load. At 18:22:56 PT, buyers trying to access auction listings received messages saying, "Invalid Item The item you requested ( XXXXXXXX) is invalid, still pending, or no longer in our database. Please check the number and try again. If this message persists, the item has either not started and is not yet available for viewing, or has expired and is no longer available. This was on open valid items. At 19:33:44 PT, users reported they could not sign in, receiving internal error messages.

On 15 Aug 2003 at 16:50:22 PT, sellers trying to list items received a message saying, "Sorry we cannot process your request". At 17:39:57 PT, sellers were blocked from editing their auction images even though they did not have bids on the items and the items had more than 12 hours to run.

On 16 Aug 2003 at 03:12:17 PT, users reported that they could still not use their back button to return to their favorites list or previous results page from a search results page. At 05:18:31 PT, ebaY reported that there were search indexing issues causing search to not index all items properly. ebaY noted it would take several hours for al the item to index properly in search. At 05:57:29 PT, sellers reported that the free ebaY counters provided by Andale, were not working. When trying to add a counter the seller only received a pizza box (red X in box). At 06:26:23 PT, users attempting to register for the ebaY anywhere points program, received messages that the users email address was incorrect, though it was the users only email address registered on ebaY. At 07:59:32 PT, sellers reported that they had to remove all their free ebaY counters from their auctions, as they had not worked for a week. ebaY was then displaying a message that all the images had been revised on the auction, though none of the pictures had been changed. At 10:03:03 PT, sellers reported they could not access My ebaY without having to reload the pages several times before it would finally load. Sellers also reported that not all their listings were showing in search, despite ebaY's claims that this had been fixed several hours earlier. At 10:32:05 PT, sellers reported that the listing pages were dropping the "The description already contains a picture URL for my item." checkbox from the Pictures and Item Details Page when listing a similar item. This added several extra steps to the already overlong listing process. At 13:03:09 PT, users trying to access items from My ebaY were forced to access an additional page to do so as clicking on the item took the user to a page that said, "Please click here to view item". At 13:34:48 PT, sellers reported that PayPal was not sending the automated winning bidder notices. Sellers who paid their fees to ebaY using PayPal reported the payment was not showing up on their account. At 14:42:24 PT, more sellers reported the problem with the checkbox for "The description already contains a picture URL for my item." defaulting to the unchecked state. Revising the item would not update with the box checked, resulting in the image icon not appearing next to the item in search. At 15:40:04 PT, users reported that the ebaY site was very slow, with pages timing out before they would open. At 17:43:23 PT, sellers attempting to check their sales in My ebaY between 7/22/03 - 8/1/03, instead received their invoice for 11/02 - 12/02.

On 17 Aug 2003 at 10:37:51 PT, users reported they could not disable the recently viewed items feature from their My ebaY preference page. Though the feature was checked to hide it, it was still appearing. At 11:24:18 PT, users reported the ebaY site very slow. At 15:12:37 PT, buyers were getting "The page cannot be displayed" messages whilst trying to search for items, necessitating multiple refreshes of the page to get the items to show up once in a while if at all. At 15:32:00 PT, users reported they were not getting their end of auction notices. At 16:17:19 PT, sellers reported receiving emails from PayPal noting that logos had been added to the seller's auctions, even though the seller had no auctions listed. At 17:26:36 PT, sellers reported they could not sign in and view their My ebaY pages, receiving messages that, "This page can't be displayed" and "input error". At 17:53:01 PT, sellers reported they could not return email to buyers with AOL email addresses, who sent them email through the ebaY system.

On 18 Aug 2003 at 18:10:40 PT users reported seeing items that were pending showing as invalid. At 18:21:07 PT sellers reported that, they had not been receiving either PayPal winner notification emails or ebaY end of auction notices. At 18:35:25 PT, ebaY reported that WebTV users were receiving errors on the search results page after performing a search. The search error occurred when the WebTV user ran a search, and then attempted to run a new or modified search from the Basic Search box. The suggested workaround was to hit the "Return" key on the keyboard to perform the search, rather than clicking the "Search" button on the page. Also going to the navigation bar (at the very top of the page) and clicking either Home or Search provided a location that a new search would work from. This glitch also caused WebTV units to stop functioning. The workaround was to use the "reload" function on the WebTV keyboard and remote, to refresh the viewer. Sometimes completely shutting down the WebTV unit for 15 minutes would also help. At 20:00:10 PT, buyers trying to email sellers had the emails bounce back as undeliverable. At 20:45:26 PT WebTV users reported they could not list as they would get stopped at step 1 of 5 (selecting selling category), which would result in them getting thrown off ebaY and being disconnected from the web. At 21:44:46 PT, users reported they could not get into the 'everything else' category from the site map page.

On 19 Aug 2003 at 02:34:37 PT, sellers reported they were receiving notices from PayPal that PayPal logos had been inserted in their auctions, even though the seller had no auctions listed. At 04:38:20 PT, sellers reported the quote and accent marks in their HTML descriptions were being changed by ebaY into question marks. At 07:07:35 PT, users reported they were having problems caused by all the ebaY banner ads. When hitting the back button, the banner shows up in the middle of the page and delays the return to previous page. At 09:41:52 PT, buyers reported that the paid button was not showing on items that had been paid for via PayPal. At 11:02:58 PT, buyers reported that camera icons were missing form the search results pages. At 11:52:24 PT, sellers reported the camera icon was no longer showing on their listings even though they used the option for, "the description already contains a picture URL for my item". In order to fix this, sellers had to revise all their item listings. At 15:02:41 PT, ebaY posted that the PayPal winning buyer notification emails were either delayed or not sent at all. At 17:46:46 PT, ebaY posted that they had not sent out End of Auction notices for items, since 12 Aug. ebaY said it would take them several days to send all the backlogged emails. At 22:23:06 PT, users reported that they were having problems with slow loading and things not working properly.

On 20 Aug 2003 at 04:56:12 PT, users reported that items were listed with an opening bid that was different than the minimum bid required in the bid box. For example if the opening bid was $24.99, but you scrolled to the bottom, you had to bid at least $49.99. At 05:32:30 PT, buyers reported that since ebaY added the recently viewed items box it has slowed everything down on the site, especially the back button. At 10:45:41 PT, users reported receiving multiple emails for each transaction. At 10:56:32 PT,sellers reported their unsold items were remaining in the "Items I'm Selling" section of My ebaY instead of moving to the "unsold" section. Relisting the item added it to the "Items I'm Selling" section but the closed item continued to remain in that section also. At 11:30:08 PT, buyers reported that search was loading so slowly it was timing out before results could be viewed. At 19:54:49 PT, users received messages saying, " The Search and Listings system is temporarily unavailable. Please try one of the following options: Return in a few minutes and try again. If you know the specific item you're looking for, try searching by item number." At 20:57:44 PT, users reported their connections were timing out on search. Users across the site kept reporting "page not found" messages for all pages and at 21:05:02 PT, received messages from the LiveWorld hosted boards that the page was not secure. At 21:17:57 PT, users reported receiving "Regularly Scheduled Maintenance" messages whilst trying to access ebaY. Messages started disappearing from the LiveWorld hosted boards at 21:34:21 PT. At 22:26:32 PT an ebaY pink posted on the Q&A board, " ***eBay Power Outage*** At approximately 20:55 PDT, eBay experienced a power outage at their primary hosting facility. All site functions are currently unavailable. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your patience. Regards, eBay " This posting was repeated on other boards and on the SAB at 23:14:24 PT.

On 21 Aug 2003 ebaY posted at 00:29:44 PT, "This evening, eBay experienced a power outage at our primary hosting facility. Due to this power failure, all site functions, including the Announcement Board, were unavailable from 20:55 until 23:45. eBay worked with its hosting vendor to restore the site as quickly as possible. In accordance with eBay's outage policy, since viewing and bidding were unavailable for more than 2 hours, eBay will be crediting all listing fees and has extended all listings scheduled to end between 20:55 PDT, 20 Aug and 02:00 PDT, 21 Aug for 24 hours. We will also be crediting the .10 fee for 10-day auctions for all listings that were active at 20:55 PDT. " ebaY posted at 04:06:13 PT that from 20:55 PT on 20 Aug to 03:27 PT on 21 Aug, users could not leave feedback. At 06:24:28 PT, users reported that search was returning error messages that it was, "unable to process request". It only worked on every few attempts. At 08:39:30 PT, users reported search still not working properly with partial page loads requiring several refreshes to get the page to open at all. At 10:10:43 PT, ebaY posted that, "During the power outage last night on August 20, some listings ended between 20:55 PDT and 23:45 PDT before eBay's site was fully functional. eBay will automatically issue credits for all fees, including final value fees, for these affected listings." At 11:02:49 PT, users continued to report problems with search receiving more error messages that, "We were unable to process your request. We are sorry, but we were unable to process your request." At 11:19:34 PT, sellers reported that they were not receiving end of auction emails. They also reported that the items were not showing up as sold on the ebaY Selling Manager. At 11:37:40 PT, users reported the site very slow. At 13:31:10 PT, users reported that feedback numbers kept changing, going up and down on subsequent reloads. At 16:45:37 PT, sellers trying to end an auction early could not get the page to load from the site map. At 16:49:39 PT, users reported they were getting page cannot be displayed messages on various ebaY pages, probably due to coding errors as ebaY started to test new home pages.

On 22 Aug 2003 at 20:34:30 PT, users trying to sign in to ebaY received a message, "Not enough storage is available to process this command."

On 23 Aug 2003 at 16:17:09 PT, buyers reported that the last item looked at feature, was causing problems with their back button. The back button would not work or return the buyer to the previous page.

On 24 Aug 2003 at 0:47:31 PT, users reported that the ebaY image servers were not working properly, slowing downloading of item pages. At 03:39:09 PT, users reported that gallery images were missing from items. At 06:32:17 PT, sellers reported that email sent to buyers on their behalf had bounced back. They also reported that PayPal end of auction emails were not sent for over 36 hours after the auction ended. At 10:36:04 PT, sellers reported that they were receiving ebaY's end of auction emails 6 days after the auction end. At 20:09:44 PT, users of ebaY's spyware/scumware toolbar reported having problems downloading it. It caused their computer to freeze up. The user tried to uninstall the toolbar but could not remove all of it.
