ebaY announced on 23 Sep 04 that it has decided to not close
Half.Com after failing to get book sellers to move over to ebaY,
and increased competition from other marketplaces, such as
Amazon.   ebaY's mistakes have also provided the incentive for
book sellers to start working on alternatives of their own, to
develop ways to sell online independent of ebaY. It also
appears that ebaY had a back-up site in http://Halfvalue.com/
Their connection to HalfValue has been hidden, but sellers claim
that email sent to customer-@halfvalue.com came back
from serv-@half.com.

One effort of interest is the AB Bookman site. AB Bookman is a
long established book sellers site with great resources for
booksellers and buyers alike. For info on getting the most from
the site take a look at -
http://abbookman.com/ABBookmantutor.html
For the Beta Booksellers Auction site, go to -

Amazon.Com has a venue some sellers of have had success
with for books and other items.   Listing is free; the Amazon
Marketplace charges fees only on sold items. For more info go

WebTV ebaY users have been having increased problems with
accessing and using ebaY US. MSN is attempting to get WebTV
users to purchase the new WebTV machine that is supposed to
work with ebaY (out 1 Oct).
http://reviews.designtechnica.com/print_firstlook56.html

WebTV users have found an alternative. Through
experimentation, it appears that
2.8.2 works well with ebaY, unlike 2.9. It is possible to
downgrade your unit to 2.8.2, and we will post the link and/or
code to do this as soon as we get the info from our WebTV
gurus.

Another alternative is to access ebaY from one of the non US
sites. ebaY's international sites tend to have less coding
garbage, and usually work better for many users, including
WebTV users.

The British Tabloids have discovered there is fraud on ebaY.
After a recent issue of British magazine, Which? Computing,
published an article by Sarah Kidner, which said "We estimate
there are 200 fraudulent auctions every day on eBay in Britain,
and that figure will only get higher as more and more people use
the site." the story was picked up by several other UK tabloids.
For example -

Evening

US news organizations such as MSNBC have been reporting on
this for years. It is good to see coverage given to the problem in
the UK that will hopefully work in a forewarned is forearmed
mode. Unfortunately the articles appear to concentrate more on
the sensationalism of the story, rather that the common sense
approaches buyers and sellers need to take to avoid being a
victim of the small percentage of scammers and thieves who
prey on the large majority of users.
