The Auction Guild Notes for Wednesday 20 Oct 1999
----------------------------------------------------------------------
eBay US- Is testing the new Hot backup system requiring 6 hours of
downtime instead of 4 during their regularly scheduled outage on Friday
morning. All auctions scheduled to end on Friday morning, October 22,
between 04:01 PT and 07:00 PT will be extended by 24 hours. Auctions
scheduled to end on Wed 20 Oct between 0001 and 0700 were extended due
to an unregular scheduled maintenance. Unfortunately some of those
auctions were accidentally extended 48 hours. These auctions will now
end and the same time as originally scheduled, but on Saturday Morning.

The differences between the two systems -
Warm Backup - major system failure 20 minutes to 2 hour recovery.
Reboot of system takes 45 minutes can be faster than warm backup
restart. Hot Backup – major system failure 5 minutes to 1 hour recovery.
This consists of two systems sharing all info, the backup system comes
up and picks up where the failing system left off.

Deadbeat Bidder policy changes have been updated, based on user
feedback. Ebay has renamed the Non Paying Bidder (NPB) Complaint to NPB
Alert. They have also revised the email they send to the deadbeat.
Sellers requested a 45 day time to file for NPB alert, eBay can only
insure 30 days of item viewability of closed auction, so would prefer
the NPB Alert be filed within 30 days. They have made closed auctions
available through search by item number only for 45 days, giving sellers
45 days to *commence* the final value fee credit request process.
Sellers have 60 days to file FVFs. They plan on rolling this program out
in 6-8 weeks. If you have any comments or suggestions about the NPB
Alert letter or the NPB policy, email sugg-@e... and include “NPB” in
the subject line by 20:00 (PDT) on Thursday, October 21, 1999. No word
if they are going to extend the 30 day free relist policy to match this
extended time period.

Ebay has admitted SPAMMING its users, and has excuses as to how it
happened on the announcement board. They plan on continuing to SPAM
their users as long as they feel they need to keep their community
“informed”. We strongly recommend complaints be filed with BBBonline
and Truste.

We are still waiting for a response from legal on section 7 of the user
agreement. Received an email from safe harbor on eBays spamming of its
users, asking for the messages with the headers turned on. Since we
sent the original emails, and there is some kind of apology on the eBay
announcement board about it, one would think that safe harbor was aware
of the problem!!!

Skippy is going to tell Halloween tales in the eBay Cafe Thursday nights
Oct. 21, and 28 at 8pm PST.
