AT 07:55:01 PT on 31 Jul, users reported that ebaY crashed. The site was
back at 07:59:43 PT. At 08:12:25 PT users got error messages when
trying to access the site, with both search and feedback not working,
and items showing up in the wrong categories, for example jewelry was
showing up in Kitchen items. My ebaY and My ebaY Germany were throwing
error messages. At 09:11:19 PT My ebaY was back, and at 09:10:52 PT
feedback was working. At 09:21:32 PT store categories in revise was not
working again due to an ebaY coding error. At 08:31:40 PT ebaY reported
the Feedback forum was down. ebaY posted at 09:10:43 PT that the
feedback forum was down from 08:00 PT to 09:02 PT. At 10:14:41 PT ebaY
reported that description search had fallen behind in indexing some
items, but they expected it to be back on schedule with indexing in
several hours.
On 1 Aug users reported at 10:35:29 PT widespread inability to access
ebaY, particularly on cable connections across the country. ebaY posted
at 11:46:13 PT that the problems were not ebaY’s fault but appeared to
be originating from different backbone Internet service providers. As
usual the only site on the entire WWW was ebaY, and if users accessed
through safeweb.com, they could get into ebaY without difficulty. At
12:15:26 PT ebaY reported that they had rerouted traffic from the
providers, they claimed were having the problems. In TAG's opinion it is
more likely that ebaY had restricted access to certain providers and
restored those points of entry. Users reported access at 12:00:55
PT.
At 12:02:44 PT, users reported cgi 6 intermittent, but this was short
lived.
ebaY reported on 1 Aug at 14:09:46 PT that sellers may intermittently
experience an error message when attempting to re-list Store fixed price
items. After a Store fixed price listing ends, sellers who try to
re-list their fixed price listings may encounter the following error:
"Minimum Buy It Now Price Too High. For fixed price item, your re-listed
item's minimum Buy It Now price must be less than or equal to the
minimum buy it now price set in the initial listing of this item."
Until ebaY fixes it, sellers can try to reduce the price by $0.01 or
more. The error should not appear if you reduce the price of your item,
or start a new listing for the item.
This re-list error message is limited to Stores fixed price re-listings
only, and should not affect ebaY listings or re-lists
On 2 Aug at 14:28:01 PT ebaY posted that there were problems with My
ebaY and Stores.
**Store sellers may not be able to access the "See Buyers" link that
directs them to a page of their sales history from the "Items I've Sold"
table within My ebaY;
**My ebaY displays the original quantity listed instead of displaying
the correct quantity available to be sold within the "Items I'm Selling"
table;
**My ebaY displays the original quantity listed instead of displaying
the correct quantity sold within the "Items I've Sold" table.
Until ebaY fixes it sellers can access past and current sales
information through the following channels:
*The "View Completed Items" link on the View Item page of store fixed
price listings;
*ebaY’s e-mail notification of completed sale (Please ensure that your
ebaY notification preferences are enabled)
ebaY is taking their system down on Fri, 3 Aug for regularly scheduled
maintenance from 01:00 PT until 03:00 PT. This will include the
Billpoint web site and the ebaY Discussion and Help Boards. ebaY will
include the US, United Kingdom, Australian, and Canadian Discussion
Boards, as well as the German, Italian and French Discussion Boards.
TO REQUEST REFUNDS from ebaY go to
http://www.auctionguild.com/generic.html?pid=33
Don’t take no for an answer; keep requesting until you get them.
ebaY posted on the MAB about severe weather in some areas of the US
causing power and other service outages. Over the past week, parts of
the country (especially West Virginia) have experienced heavy flooding.
This may delay delivery of items or payments being sent to or from
buyers or sellers in these areas. If you are transacting business with
people located in or near these parts of the US, you might want to be
aware of these circumstances which could produce delays beyond the
control of your transaction partner.
ebaY stockholders have filed a class action suit against Morgan Stanley.
To view a copy of the complaint online please visit
www.sbclasslaw.com. If you wish to discuss this action or have any
questions concerning this notice or your rights or interests with
respect to these matters, please contact Schiffrin & Barroway, LLP (Marc
A. Topaz, Esq. or Stuart L. Berman, Esq.) toll free at 1-888-299-7706 or
1-610-667-7706, or via e-mail at in-@sbclasslaw.com.
ebaY is changing the "Notification Preferences" process. They
are
claiming that they are going to simplify the SPAM option page, including
adding a confirmation page that clearly shows that the notification
preferences have been saved. They will also have a method for users to
view the last 90 days of changes made. This page will show the
preference change, the date and the time that the changes were made to
the Notification Preferences. For more info go to
http://pages.ebay.com/help/privacycentral1.html
TAG warns users that in the past ebaY has used the opportunity of such
changes to "accidentally" set ALL users options to Opt In for SPAM,
regardless of what the users settings were, so once the changes are
made, make sure you check your settings.
ebaY is now defaulting the category selection to the previous category
in which the item was listed. If you decide that you want to list in a
different category, they have provided a link to the old Relist Your
Item form, which includes the category selection boxes.
ebaY has changed the collectors page on ebaY Motors. The ebaY Motors
collectors page allows buyers to better search the ebaY Motors
categories for the specific type of collector car.
http://pages.ebay.com/ebaymotors/browse/Collector.html
You can now enter a car in the ebaY Motors ‘Most Wanted’ page and
it
will be sent to ebaY Motors and saved in My ebaY. You can also go in to
My ebaY in the Favorites tab, under Favorite Searches, and choose to
have an email sent to you if a similar car is listed on the site.
http://www.ebaymotors.com/ ebaY
will gather this info, and ebaY will
tabulate all of the suggestions and periodically post them on the ebaY
Motors ‘Most Wanted’ Board for all sellers to see.
As ebaY continues to get users to offer ebaY’s Billpoint through means
fair and foul, ebaY and Visa have a new contest going. Use your Visa
card at ebaY through Billpoint during the "Visa Online Shopping Spree"
this August, and you could win a $50,000 Visa card or one of 250 $100
Visa cards. http://www.visa.com/pr/oto/shoppingspree/where.jsp

Official rules http://www.billpoint.com/promotion/shopspree_rules.html
ebaY’s latest prohibited item, Travel and Vacation vouchers are banned
from their site as of 1 Aug.

Most cordless telephones are lawful and may be sold on ebaY. Cordless
telephones, as opposed to cellular and PCS telephones, are designed to
transmit to the user's own base unit connected to an existing telephone
line. All cordless telephones listed for sale on ebaY must be authorized
by the FCC. Authorized cordless telephones are required to display an
FCC identification number (FCC ID) and compliance label. Listings
of a
long-range cordless telephone that operates below 1000 MHz and that
transmits over one kilometer (1094 yards) must state the specific FCC
identification number displayed on that telephone. For information on
how to identify authorized FCC equipment, which includes telephones go
to http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/png-scanners.html
For Motorcycle ethusiasts - Kruse International is going to sell a
private collection of more than 60 classic Italian motorcycles on ebaY
Motors beginning 1 Aug.

For users having problems editing their About Me page, try using a
Netscape browser rather than Internet Explorer to access and edit the
page. Another possible solution, brought to us by a TAGnotes
subscriber, is to edit using Internet Explorer or even the AOL Browser.
Sellers have to wait for 3 minutes for the delay in HTML code transfer.
Once you open the page wait a full 3 minutes and then click on EDIT and
the EDIT page will load quickly and completely. The same applies after
EDITING. Make sure you wait 3 minutes before clicking SAVE and it
works.
Billpoint editorial on the TAG website

The endless problems with ebaY picture services continue. Decline the
ActiveX control if asked and choose to opt to not use ebaY picture
services. Bypass the process altogether by going to
http://cgi5.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ShowPhotoOption&page=167
This takes you to a listing page that skips over the ebaY image hosting.
Another route you can try is
http://cgi5.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ListItemForSaleShow
And another subscriber provided alternative is to simply ignore the java
program/ActiveX
request and leave the window open while listing. You should be able to
list items though the applet is neither accepted nor denied. For those
who cannot use the listing page without the picture-services option.
Once your listing is completed, deny the java program/ActiveX and close
that window.
Article on why ebaY has succeeded where all others have failed to have a
successful consumer site on the net. In TAG's view it unfortunately
gives a fair weather, fairly hyped and one sided look at ebaY’s success,
without in any way addressing the challenges ebaY has to face, or what
ebaY is doing wrong that will undermine its long term success.

Amazon Auctions, zShops and Marketplace has new user boards. The new
boards link is at

The old links are no longer valid, and the new boards still have
glitches and appear very slow.

Yahoo.Com has extended their 99 Cents No Reserve Showcase for an
additional two weeks, until 17 Aug. Sellers are charged incrementally
based on the length of the auction to list in this showcase. Showcase
cost 10 cents per day.

AuctionWatch is no longer searching ebaY on its meta search engine. An
interesting change in light of the high moral ground argument taken by
AuctionWatch when ebaY banned bots from their site. TAG speculates that
it was a term of agreement for AuctionWatch to be the first site whose
tools ebaY would promote to their corporate sellers.
