16 Jul at 21:09:42 PT users reported that they could not set a=20
reserve while listing auctions. The auction listing would show NA in =
the=20
reserve block. Users reported at 21:27:24 PT that search and completed
items were intermittently down. Users reported intermittent problems
with cgi3 at 22:39:23 PT and at 23:12:40 PT listing became =
intermittently=20
unavailable. These problems lasted until approximately 00:02:00 PT.
On 17Jul at 03:21:47 PT users reported cgi 3, 6, ebay.com all down
These problems did not last long and the site ran normally with the=20
normal unfixed and ongoing problems impeding users ability to use the =
site.
On 18 Jul ebaY reported at 01:52:28 PT that listings were unavailable=20
from 00:55 PT to 01:25 PT. At 02:26:02 PT ebaY stores were not=20
working, with users reporting problems until 06:41:07 PT. At 18:10:32 =
PT=20
ebaY posted that users across the country were having problems accessing
certain functions on ebaY. As usual, ebaY did not think the problems=20
were internal, but were internet problems. At 18:21:47 PT users
=
reported=20
problems with relisting auctions.
On 19Jul at 08:02:12 PT users posted problems with site slowness, and=20
Problems with search. The site continued slow through 08:21:18 PT.=20
Sellers were also reporting that ebaY had not sent the Billpoint payment =
notices despite proof from buyers that they had made payments. At=20
09:50:44 PT users reported site access intermittent lasting until =
12:26:01 PT. =20
Users reported getting HTTP Error 401 401.1 Unauthorized: Logon Failed=20
Messages at 19:39:32 PT and performing Illegal function messages while=20
using Search. 19:54:08 PT brought continued reports of search problems=20
with reports being posted through 20:23:32 PT. In addition reports came =
from users that for approximately three weeks ebaY had a reoccurring=20
problem with the relist function. When you relist an item, it =
automatically
drops the pennies in the price so requires a revision of the listing to =
add the=20
amount back. For example an item listed at $9.99 would list as $9.00. =20
Users report that ebaY has recognized the problem in emails but not =
fixed
it or posted about it on the SAB. ebaY posted at 22:52:07 PT that =
members=20
were intermittently unable to view their ebaY images. In some cases, =
clearing=20
the browser cache or temporary internet files alleviated the problem for =
some users. Others are able to view their images after forcing their =
browser=20
to reload the page by holding down the shift key while hitting reload or =
refresh.
eBay took the system down for regularly scheduled maintenance from=20
01:00 PT until 03:00 PT on Fri 20 Jul. They also took the Billpoint=20
web site and functions down and the discussion and help boards for=20
maintenance during the same time frame. This included the US, UK,
Australian, and Canadian discussion boards. At 04:05:26 PT users
reported view auctions down, illegal operation messages and blank
pages showing up while trying to access the site. At 04:36:30 PT
ebaY posted that the ability to update or add a credit card was down=20
from 03:00 PT to 04:10 PT. At 05:22:32 PT ebaY posted that a
small subset of users could not view items, bid, or list from=20
04:00 PT to 05:00PT. Despite the outage meeting ebaYs time parameters
for automatic refunds, no relief was offered by ebaY. At 06:10:51 PT
users reported invalid page fault errors that shuts ebaY down in users
browsers, while searching. A user posted that a search of the html=20
source on the page when the error occurs shows that the problems have
something to do with the script language relating to the new link at the =
bottom of the page with the search features questions link. At =
06:27:02 PT=20
users continued to report search problems with illegal operation =
messages=20
on category and search results pages at 06:59:36 PT. At 13:55:54 PT =20
ebaY reported the boards were down from 13:49 PT until 14:07 PT. =20
At 18:12:32 PT ebaY posted that users were having problems with=20
viewing images on ebaY. =20
There has been no mitigation of the flashing banner problems on ebaY
With users continuing to make hundreds of posts on the ebaY and=20
OAI/OTI boards saying the banners are making shopping on ebaY=20
untenable. User posts indicate that the flashing banners are not =
visible=20
whilst using Netscape browsers, AOL, IE from an Apple computer and=20
are bypassed fast enough on high speed connections to not cause=20
problems. Users can also download programs to remove the banners,=20
but will still Be slowed down by them. A very effective method is to=20
follow the Directions at this link to restrict what ebaY can plant on=20
your computer. Follow the directions posted here
http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/rockboss2000@aol.com/
TO REQUEST REFUNDS from ebaY go to
http://www.auctionguild.com/generic.html?pid=3D33
Don't take no for an answer; keep requesting until you get them.
ebaY is once again demonstrating how unleveled the playing field is by
giving their ebaY Premier live auction listings preference on the =
category=20
listing pages. In TAG's view, ebaY needing to force these listings on a =
disinterested public clearly demonstrates what a complete failure ebaY=20
has had with their Butterfields ventures. ebaY sellers continue to =
carry=20
these ebaY failures at the sacrifice of equitable treatment, site =
stability,=20
and fair fees. The live auction listings getting top billing, makes =
buyers=20
wade through a morass of items they can't and don't want to bid on, to=20
find the real sellers Listings. =20
ebaY is persisting in its intention to take down the Wanted Board.
They have removed the links from the site map, though it can still be=20
found from the chat drop down menus. ebaY has not said when they=20
will remove this board in the face of widespread protest. TAG=20
recommends that all Wanted board users find another site to host your=20
wanted board and let everyone know where you are moving to, before=20
ebaY closes you down=20

There is an article on retail sales on ebaY at
http://www.washtech.com/news/media/11274-1.html
Pink Quote of the Day at 06:03:43 PT on 20 Jul, Gwyneth@ebay while
defending ebaYs never ending problems and the corprospeak ebaY=20
puts on the announcement board said, "I understand the frustration, and=20
we DO fix these things. But technical issues do happen, and at times,=20
they do not even originate with us. The very nature of the Internet =
means=20
you'll have these things happen. With millions of users on different =
systems=20
in different parts of the world, it is not always an easy task to =
pinpoint what's=20
happening. Our Operations team is a very hardworking team that stays on=20
top of things. Reality is, however, hiccups occur." TAG finds it =
interesting=20
that these endless problems occur on ebaY and not on sites that process=20
many more hits and larger databases of information. ebaY is not in the =
top=20
5 sites getting hits on the net, is usually not in the top ten and =
receives a=20
much smaller percentage of hits than sites such as AOL and Yahoo, who=20
manage to stay up 24/7 without scheduled 4 hour weekly outages, in=20
addition to endless outages and glitches. This constant down time puts=20
Meg Whitman's 99% uptime statement in the category of blatant lies, and=20
puts into doubt everything ebaY reports to the public.
ebaY has added separate boards for Mister Lister, Seller's Assistant =
Basic=20
and Seller's Assistant Pro. These can be found at=20
Mister Lister http://servlet.ebay.com/ForumController?dest=3D
http://forums.ebay.com/dws?14@@.ee7b9ce
Seller's Assistant Basic http://servlet.ebay.com/ForumController?dest=3D

Sellers who want to spare their buyers' ebaY SPAM messages when=20
outbid, can opt-out of the "similar item" emails. Once a seller
opts-out, unsuccessful bidders for that seller's auctions will not=20
receive emails containing the similar item content, including the list =
of=20
seller's other items. As further coercion to get sellers to opt their =
customers=20
in for SPAM and sign their customers over to ebaY, sellers that opt out=20
will not have their items included in similar item content sent to =
bidders=20
that have lost an auction. To opt out, go to My ebaY, select the=20
"Preferences/Set-Up" tab and then the "Change end of item notices for=20
unsuccessful bidder preference" link under "Seller Preferences". =
Choosing,=20
"No (do not include my items)" will opt the seller out of the similar =
item=20
content. TAG sees the very language that ebaY uses as manipulative and=20
coercive. This is an excellent opportunity for sellers to show =
solidarity and=20
en masse OPT OUT. Buyers can participate by emailing sellers that opt=20
them in for SPAM and complaining to them. As a buyer, to turn off and=20
opt out of ebaYs SPAM end of item notices that email bottom feeding=20
lists of items to losing bidders go to=20
http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?OptinLoginShow
and set the item that says 'End Of Item' notice to NO.
For users having problems editing their About Me page, try using a=20
Netscape browser rather than Internet Explorer to access and edit the =
page.

ebaY posted their second quarter earnings on 19 Jul. Meg posted a
short statement on the MAB announcing the results. Once again ebaY
has lied about the number of registered users and the percentage of
up time, putting in doubt all the other information in the reports.
