On 30 Jun at 03:08:49 PT users reported ebaY US and ebaY Germany=20
were down and were receiving 'page can't be displayed' messages.
At 04:48:18 PT site access was very slow. Reports of site slowness=20
continued throughout the morning. At 11:16:48 PT ebaYs pic services
went down with reports about the inability to access any images on
ebaYs servers including images hosted by ebaY and logos and icons.=20
ebaY posted at 11:15:53 PT that graphics and images may not be=20
appearing properly on the www.ebay.com site for some users. They
claimed that no other systems were affected, and all functions were=20
available. Since pages could not download past the hanging images,=20
this was patently untrue. ebaY posted at 12:07:42 PT that some=20
functions were down from 11:50 PT to 11:55 PT. ebaY claims some=20
portions of the site were down. They said that images on the=20
www.ebay.com site were still intermittently unavailable. At=20
13:51:55 PT the live auction viewing and bidding applet needed to=20
be reloaded so that users could get to live auctions. Users continued =
to report the total inability to access images and the resultant =
problems with the outage causing pages to hang up, blank pages, pages =
without bidding logos, pages without item pictures and even the ebaY =
system status lights unavailable through 15:16:30 PT. At 16:28:59 PT =
ebaY posted that the issue causing graphics and images to not appear =
properly on the www.ebay.com site were fixed as of 15:55 PT. At =
16:36:57 PT louise@ebay posted, "One more time: there will be no =
extensions and no refunds for the image servers being intermittently =
unavailable today. The outage policy I posted a link to earlier covers =
"outages during which bidders cannot place bids or cannot effectively =
locate items via our Title Search function."   Since this was exactly =
what occurred, bidders could not search or bid because pages would not =
download, and since this outage lasted for over 4 hours, ebaY should =
issue automatic refunds, but since they won't, sellers should demand =
their refunds and not take 'no' for an answer. At 17:15:44 PT users =
again were receiving 'This function is currently unavailable' messages. =
At 19:33:06 PT ebaY posted that they were canceling the Discover the =
Collector in You contest due to problems with images. They did not say =
when the contest would resume, only that it would, once the image =
problems got fixed.

On 1 Jul the site remained stable, with only the ongoing long term
unresolved problems found at=20
http://www.auctionguild.com/generic.html?pid=3D32
=20
TO REQUEST REFUNDS from ebaY go to

Don't take no for an answer; keep requesting until you get them.

On the lighter side -=20
Some humor TAG felt the need to share - this is a very amusing satirical =
post from the ebaY boards made by a red star seller on 30 Jun, "30 =
June 2001 Associated Press(AP) *** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*** Ebay =
(NASDAQ) was the target of a vicious hacker attack that lasted over two =
hours early this afternoon. After=20
slipping past ebay's security firewalls in approximately 8 seconds, the =
unknown hacker proceeded to fix over 1100 known bugs in ebay's auction =
programs. The hacker, on an anonymous post to the ebay stock chat board =
on a competitor's site, said the following: "I hacked into ebay with the =
original intention of taking the site down. Once into the site, and =
having had a thorough look at their programming, I felt it would be much =
more interesting to fix most everything and then stand off and see how =
long it would take them to screw it all up again. Most God awful =
programming I've ever seen...If I had taken the site down it would have =
just been a mercy kill." Ebay spokesman, RecoReed, said ebay is working =
with multiple law enforcement agencies to identify the hacker. A FBI =
spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, said "If we catch this guy, =
we're going to hire him to fix a bunch of our own software.""

Users continue to report difficulties getting past ebaY picture services =
while listing. Decline the Active X control and choose to opt to not =
use ebaY picture services by going to=20

$$$ WARNING $$$ $$$ WARNING $$$
The reports about Billpoint acceptance being the default on listing=20
and relisting keep coming in. The DEFAULT is YES on Billpoint=20
for users who are signed up with Billpoint. This is happening if=20
the seller wants to offer Billpoint or not. The only way to prevent=20
this from happening appears to be leaving Billpoint permanently.
Carefully check your auction listings and make sure the options are=20
set the way you want them. For more info about this problem go to
http://forums.ebay.com/dws?50@46.xNV9aGeQGsV^-@.eeb6f5a

Pink Quote of the Day, Billpoint is now claiming that the above =
mentioned glitch is a new though unannounced 'feature' meant to help =
sellers be more efficient. In an email Su M. from ebaY Customer Support =
said, "Hello, Thank you for your concern=20
regarding the report that our system has a "bug" in it that is =
automatically selecting the Billpoint payment options on your listings. =
Please let me assure you that this is not a "bug", but rather a feature =
designed to save sellers time. When a seller registers for Billpoint, we =
feel as though they are doing so with the intent of using the service on =
a full time basis. However, we do realize that this is not always the =
case. Therefore, you can deselect the option to accept Billpoint on any =
specific listing you create. In addition, we do provide the ability to =
change the default selection to not accepting Billpoint, which can be =
saved for all future listings. If you would like to change this =
default, please follow the instructions below: 1. List an item using =
the eBay "Sell Your Item" form, just like you always do. 2. At the top =
of the form, check the box that says "Remember my selling preferences." =
3. Fill out the rest of the form, remembering to uncheck the options for =
"eBay Online Payments". 4. Click the "Continue..." button to review =
your listing and save your new selling preferences. We can't remove=20
the feature from any current listings, however you can cancel any bids, =
end the auction early, then relist any items without the Billpoint =
payment option." early. You can finish ending your listing by clicking =
on "Continue". 5. If there are bids and you select to sell the item to =
the high bidder(s), you will end the listing at the current high bid =
price by clicking on "Sell item". You will then be instructed to contact =
the high bidder to complete the transaction." TAG sees that once again =
ebaY needs to use the SPAMMERS opt out method of tricking users into =
offering an ebaY product. Is Billpoint such a complete failure that =
ebaY has to resort to such underhanded=20
methods to get sellers to use it?
=20
For a list of corporate sellers go to the TAG editorial on ebaY's=20
links ban, and what you can do about it. ebaY Cuts The Threads of The =
Web? FIGHT BACK!!! Also the Billpoint logos are NOT in compliance
with the 88X33 limit. Join our fight to help level the playing field so =
the users who built ebaY have a chance, and fight against ebaY's new =
corporate favoritism program. ebaY has started to bring the corporate =
sellers into compliance

ebaY has added more advertising to the ebaY site. Though ebaY=20
has promised time and again NOT to put ads on sellers auction=20
listing pages, they have done so by flashing an ad banner every time
you hit a back button from an auction. ebaY experimented with these
ads for several months, but they have now lengthened the time and=20
frequency of these ads so that most users are seeing them. The ads
are also causing navigation on the site to slow down drastically,=20
especially for dial-up users. To circumvent ALL ebaY advertising,=20
go to this site and download their free or for fee services.
http://www.adsubtract.com

ebaY has once again removed posts on their site showing publicly
available ebaY contact information. Remember all this info including
analog mail and email addresses and phone numbers, regular and toll=20
free, refund info and insider trading info can be found at=20

Post this link on the ebaY and other boards whenever someone seeks=20
ebaY contact info. Email this link to anyone who needs it.

It took three days for ebaY to get the free listings indexed and the=20
numbers on their site to reflect the free listing day. As a result of =
the=20
free listing day ebaY has approx 7.13 mil auctions inflated by=20
approx 10% for double category listings (free on free listing day)=20
yielding approx 6.4 mil auctions. This increase will be played up
by ebaY on their second quarter report, the first increase of any=20
significance in over a year and purchased with free listings. On
1 Jul 2000 ebaY had approx 4.44 million auctions. =20

Amazon Auctions, zShops and Marketplace=20
has had intermittent problems with its bulk and book upload utility.
Amazon claims that all problems have been fixed as of 27 Jun.
They took the marketplace down for maintenance for approx=20
1 hour on 29Jun. Sellers had problems listing in the marketplace
for several hours on 1 Jul, with listing either being inaccessible
or very slow. Problems continued into 2 Jul.
