ebaY posted at 19:50:45 PT on 27 Dec that The Soapbox Discussion
Board went down at 22:00 on 26 Dec. the other boards were working.
ebaY reported the boards back up at 22:07:59 PT with some
intermittent problems.
There is a reminder on the AB that members should never send
credit card information or passwords through email and should
use caution when you receive email asking you to update
personal information. Members have reported receiving email
that appears to have been sent by ebaY, but in fact was not. These
emails appear to be coming from manag-@ebay.com, which
is not a valid ebaY email address. The email claims that there is
a problem with registration information, and includes a link to
what appears to be the ebaY Home Page, but which has a totally
different URL. The My ebaY link on that page does not go to the real
My ebaY page. Report emails like these to safeh-@ebay.com.
To update credit info on ebaY go to

The URLs for the real ebaY Home pages are -

http://www.ebay.com/index.html; http://www.ebay.com.au/
http://www.ebay.co.uk/; http://www.ebay.compuserve.com
http://pages.ca.ebay.com/index.html; http://www.ebay.digitalcity.com
http://www.ebay.icq.com; http://www.ebay.netscape.com
http://www.ebay.go.com; http://pages.ebay.disney.com/index.html
http://www.ebay.de/austria/index.html;
http://pages.fr.ebay.com/index.html
http://www.ebay.de/; http://pages.ebay.com/jpbridge.html
The URL for the real My ebaY is:
http://cgi1.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MyEbayLogin
and all the associated My ebaY pages for all the sites above.
For example the URL for, My ebaY UK is

ebaY did its regularly scheduled maintenance on Fri morn 29 Dec
between 01:00 PT and 03:00 PT. Archived items were unavailable
until 06:00 PT. This included viewing completed auction items.
On 29 Dec, ebaY is taking down the Account Tab in My ebaY for
maintenance from 23:30 PT to 24:00 PT making member account
information unavailable.
ebaY has made some changes to their search and category item pages.
ebaY will now remove expired items from category listings as they do
from search. they have also added regional filtering for all ebaY
regions. The last region selected will be remembered, if you allow
cookies. ebaY has eliminated grab bag and hot auctions. The hot icon
will remain in search for now. The regional filter is available on all
categories.
There are a couple of articles in the main stream media about
ebaYs change in policy regarding off ebaY sales.

Yahoo Auctions appears to be preparing to charge listing fees in the
very near future. We have no new information on this but a
discussion with a mainstream media person who covers Yahoo
indicated that Yahoo is actively seeking new revenue streams as
advertising dollars dry up. Since Yahoo has been known to try
many things, which they don't necessarily field, TAG hopes that
Yahoo will reconsider this move. If Yahoo needs to charge fees
and wants to maintain their growth in the OAI/OTI, TAG
recommends to Yahoo, in the strongest terms, to consider charging
a Final Value Fee and NOT a listing fee. Since selling on Yahoo
is different than on ebaY, listing is not used in the same way.
Fees of 50 cents per listing might make it economically unfeasible
for sellers to continue using Yahoo, destroying months of work
by organizations such as TAG and MAM, who have made concerted
efforts to get sellers to at least try listing and selling on Yahoo.
It appears that Yahoo is looking at a model similar to Amazon's,
where they offer free auction listings if you pay their monthly
store fee. Currently the smallest store (50 items) cost $100./month.

Honesty/Andale had an embarrassing problem on 28 Dec when they
tried to send out a message to allow folks to opt out of a newsletter
they have scheduled to start in January. A problem with their emailer
program caused multiple people to receive all the responses to the email
and a loop formed so folks received multiple emails. They managed to
stop the email program, cutting the loop and the flow
of very strange emails. http://www.honesty.com
