eBay continues to experience problems with site outages and
intermittent nonavailability of services. On 5 Sep at 07:51PT
access to CGI 1, 3, 5 and 6 started throwing server reset
messages as reported on the OAI boards. Problems continued
intermittently until approx 13:32. The feedback system was
not working, My ebaY was down intermittently, but the
most persistent problem appeared to be in the cgi5 server.
The feedback system was back at 13:57 on 5 Sep. ebaY reported
at 12:15:42 PT on 7 Sep that listings in the Gallery had not been
updated since 16:00 PT on Wed 6 Sept. The Gallery time stamp
was reporting that listings were current as of 09:35 PT, Thurs
7 Sep and this was incorrect. If you feel your auctions were
negatively impacted by these various malfunctions, request refunds
from the form at http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?

End of auction (EOA) notices from 3, 4 and 5 Sep are several
days late. ebaY is currently considering putting seller and buyer
contact information in the EOA notices. This info will include
email addy, actual name, city and state and phone numbers. If
you want to provide feedback, ebaY has a thread on their boards
where you can post your comments titled
Should ebay enclose contact information in EOAs at

Users reported problems on the OAI boards with
Mister Lister on 7 Sep at 18:43. Problems with relists
were also reported.

eBay Picture Services are now available in Books, Movies, Music,
Coins & Stamps, Collectibles, Computers in addition to Antiques
& Art and Pottery & Glass categories. eBay Picture Services
allows 2 free photos per listing, an additional 4 photos for 50
cents, and a slide show format for $1. eBay plans Picture Services
in all categories later in September. TAG does not recommend
using the ebaY picture service because you are required to
download an ActiveX file, one of the most invasive of
tracking devices, and something not required by any
other pic hosting service on the net.

ebaY has five new category index pages for preview. Fifteen pages
are being redesigned. The first changes are in highly trafficked
category areas, and provide more room for directed advertising
banners and links. The preview pages can be found at

ebaY be down for regularly scheduled maintenance on Fri 8 Sep
between 01:00 PT and 03:00 PT

ebaY has a long post about fraud on the AB including a list of people
(by real name - a violation of ebaYs user agreement and a suspendable
offense) that ebaY claims they helped punish for defrauding buyers.
TAG is glad to see that ebaY does acknowledge that fraud happens
in a very small percentage of sales. Unfortunately they then go on
to hype their various fee based services once again leaving an
impression that if the seller (who in most cases pays the fees for
these services) does not use these services, they are not a safe
trader. ebaY recommends several things they feel bidders should do,
many of which TAG finds very hypocritical since ebaY does not provide
the services they are trying to force the sellers who use their
service to provide. TAG has lots of criticism for ebaY's suggestions
and will post them tomorrow on the www.auctionguild.com site on the
ebaY and Fraud page. TAG will also have the ebaY post in its
entirety in case it disappears from the AB.

Approx 4.92 million current listing
More unaccountable discrepancies - this number reflects an increase
of approx 140,000 listings since yesterday. Since ebaY typically gets
60-70,000 listings a day, this is a very large one day jump,
particularly as there were problems with Mister Lister reported today.
