eBay posted at 07:38:19 on 11 Aug that credit card transmission
via their secure server was down. This prevented placing a credit
card on file or updating credit card information. These problems
were reported resolved at 08:53:40. The feedback system continues
to not work intermittently. If you can't leave feedback, email
supp-@e... with feedback in the subject line. Though the
site appeared to work relatively smoothly all day, particularly
compared to the performance over the last few days, there were
reports on the boards of sporadic and short lived glitches of CGI 3
at 14:07, and at CGI 5 at 19:39PT.   Kevin Pursglove predicted
there could be 10 more days of glitches and problems on eBay,
in an article on Bloomberg.Com - http://quote.bloomberg.com/

eBay posted at 16:25:13 on 11 Aug that there was a bug in their
Description Search feature. When an item was listed and got a
bid before being indexed by Description Search, it would not
appear in Description Search results for the life of the auction.
The item would appear in Title Search. This problem has been
well documented, researched and explained on a site put up by an
eBay user vickishome at
http://www.vickishome.com/00ebay/indexproblem.html
eBay said they fixed this glitch today for all new listings. This
problem will be monitored by users to see if the fix was complete.
If you have auctions that received very early bids, you should
check them to insure they are in description search, and end and
relist any auctions that are not. Request refunds from the form at
http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?

eBay also posted a technical update to try to explain some of the
background of the problems. For two weeks, eBay has experienced
site slowness as well as unavailability of several key features.
Starting on 2 Aug they began a project to move recently closed items
from eBay's main server to another server, with the goal of
improving
overall site scalability and performance. This process caused
unanticipated technical problems. The problems impacted features,
including My eBay, Seller Search and Bid History. To fix the
problems, they reconfigured their changes and implemented code
fixes. As of this morning, the site was operating relatively normally.
Add To Your Item Description feature is causing eBay concern
so they may disable it. They say they will post if they need to
disable the feature.

In response to the question - How do we request refunds for listing
fees, final value fees and special feature fees for auctions that
were ruined because of outages? - we received a response that set out
the following procedure for refunds:
If you have an auction that ended within 24 hours of a soft outages
or if you still have auctions running you can end them early and
relist.
Send -
* The item number(s) of the ended auction(s)
* The specific fee(s) charged for them
* Your seller's email address or User ID
* The phrase, GIVE CREDIT in the "Subject" line
using the online webform found at
http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?

Which can also be accessed from
http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-support.html
eBay will give credit for the related fees. They must have
ALL of this information before they can issue credits.

If they deny credit DO NOT GIVE UP. Continue to send credit
requests, and also email supp-@e.... It has taken some
folks a dozen requests to get the refunds, but they DID get them.

Yahoo Auctions is now making their free bulk lister available only
to users with a rating of +5 or better. In an email message sent to
users on 11 Aug, Yahoo Auctions announced that on Fri 18 Aug 2000,
the Bulk Loader will be a free service to all sellers who maintain a
rating of five or above. Sellers whose feedback rating is lower than
five will be required to submit items through their standard
submission process (http://auctions.yahoo.com/0-submit.html) until
their rating reaches five. Yahoo feels this is a way to reward
sellers who offer quality merchandise and great customer service,
and improve the quality of their site. Given the number of online
and software auction management and listing tools available to the
OAI, TAG sees this as a futile effort on Yahoo's part. It also
appears ill timed as many very high quality and experienced sellers
are coming over to Yahoo at this time. Yahoo should make some
allowance for users who have proved their quality through their
eBay feedback.
