The Auction Guild Notes for Thursday 29 June 2000

Yahoo is purchasing Onelist/eGroups for approx $410 million dollars
worth of stock. We do not know how this will impact our use
of Onelist/eGroups to post this newsletter, but we are investigating
our options to insure the same level of security and privacy we
had with Onelist/eGroups. We will keep you informed of changes
as this develops over the next few months.

Major telephone problems are currently occurring on the west
coast. Pacific Bell reported a phone outage in the San
Francisco Bay area. A fire in a subway tunnel destroyed telephone
cables yesterday. Nearly 30 thousand customers are without
telephone lines and internet access, and it might take two weeks
to return phone service to some areas. Please consider these
problems when trying to contact one of your trading partners, as
they might be in an affected area.

eBay reported at 09:42:37 PT that the problems with end of auction
notices were fixed, but there would still be delays with End of
Auction notices and Daily Status reports until they can clear the
backlog of emails. In addition at 10:12:54 PT eBay reported that
Sprint PCS users may experience intermittent availability of
wireless service between 23:00 PT Thursday night and 05:00 PT
Friday morning. This may impact access to eBay Anywhere services.
If you feel your auctions were negatively impacted by any of these
problem we highly recommend you contact bill-@e...
and request a refund.

eBay has entered into an agreement with Topps Co that will provide
access to Topps Vault items, and a way for users of eTopps, to list
their cards on eBay. Topps has agreed to conduct a number of
auctions from the Topps Vault on eBay. Topps Vault items are
historic memorabilia, such as photos, player signatures, and cards.
Topps will integrate the eBay auction listing process into eTopps
to provide access to single cards as well as the ability to keep
cards in a customer account at Topps storage. When an eTopps user
is ready to sell a card, they can list the item on eBay from their
eTopps account. This service will not be available until Spring 2001.

eBay Motors is now integrated into 6 AOL properties; AOL,
AOL.com, Netscape, ICQ, DigitalCity, and Compuserve. eBay
believes that these new eBay Motors links, will bring in new users.
When customers enter eBay Motors from one of these sites, eBay
Motors pages will have additional navigational options to help
customers click back to the sites they came from. Non AOL users
will not have additional navigational links.

The test phase of eBays Picture Services, a pic hosting service
on eBay, is now available in the Antiques & Art and Pottery &
Glass categories. This beta test is to get input from users in order
to make changes to the service before it goes up on the entire site.
There are two versions, one for Internet Explorer (IE) 4.0+ users
and one for all other browser. If you use IE 4.0+ or your ISP has
integrated IE 4.0+ in to their software (such as AOL) you will
have to download the Active X control after selecting the beta
link for Pic Services. This is a one-step, one-minute, one-time only
download. The Active X control permits drag-and-drop functions,
the ability to crop and rotate pictures, and claims faster upload
times for IE 4.0+ users. All other browsers do not require
a download of Active X, but will not have the same capabilities,
but adding pictures is still easy without the extras. If you have IE
4.0 + and want to try the service but not download Active X,
eBay recommends that you use a different browser, such as
Netscape. First 2 pics are free, you may add up to 4 more
pictures for a flat fee of 50 cents and display your pictures in
a slide show format for $1.00. Additional pics and slide show
are optional features. You can continue to use your regular pic
hosting service if you so desire. For more info go to

Send feedback to sugg-@e... with eBay Picture Services
in the heading.

TAG recommended in an earlier issue on this subject, that you use
this service with great caution, because of the ActiveEx utility
that tracks your online usage, the as of yet unannounced fee schedule
after the trial is over, and the inability to easily move your
auctions from site to site, since eBay will have your photos.

In an email exchange with a TAGnotes subscriber, eBay has
admitted that the statistics in their report on eBay special
features, were incorrect in the Power Seller newsletter. No
one at eBay seems to be able to explain how any of these figures
were arrived at, and TAG still holds that since the criteria for the
so called research were very flawed, the report has no validity.
We do not recommend you use eBays report on its special features
as a reason for spending your money on them. Use your own
experience and instincts as to whether they provide you with
additional bids and price increases to justify the additional non-
refundable fees for featured auctions, bolding, icons, gallery etc.

Approx 4.44 million current listing
