eBay despite posting that they would stop directing linked banner
ads to compete with eBay sellers, continues to do so. We have
queried this with eBay and await their response. In another move
away from person to person trading, a long time eBay power
seller shippingsupply.com was contacted today by eBay rep
Bob Hedler who wanted to know how they would feel if eBay
sold a 4 to 5 million dollar advertising contract to someone
like Staples, and provided direct competition to this seller. The
seller told eBay that they would be probably be put out of
business by such competition. The seller asked why ebay was
not paying attention to the communities reaction to the
advertising banners, and why eBay was not promoting eBays
sellers rather than going outside eBay to bring in banner ads that
take people away from eBay. Mr Hedler said they could get
money from the big boys to pay for eBays advertising. The
seller wanted to know to what end? If all eBay was doing was
bringing buyers to the site so they could click on banner ads
that took them away from eBay, how do the sellers gain anything?

One idea to combat these banner ads is to write to the advertisers,
object to their ads on eBay, and say that not only are you not
going to buy a single products from them as long as they have
banners on eBay, but are going to email all your friends and post
about it on all the boards you post to.

Some of the icons and links on the eBay home page and the
category index pages were not displaying correctly today
for a couple of hours due to broken icon/image links.
