eBay conducted its regularly scheduled maintenance on Fri morning,
19 May 01:00 PT and 05:00 PT which led to several problems
on Friday. Search updates were running 12 to 15 hours behind. eBay
did an unscheduled system downtime from approx 10:50 PT to
11:05 PT to perform some additional maintenance they were unable
to complete during the normally scheduled maintenance, and then
another approx 10 minutes downtime at 16:30 PT . The changes
then had to be removed as they were ineffective so they were down
again for approx 20 minutes beginning at 17:05 PT and then
ran into problems with slowness and intermittent site availability
which affected access to item pages, bidding, listing, and
registration. At 18:28 PT the Sell Your Item form and Mister
Lister systems went down. At 19:47 PT eBay reported most of the
problems solved, with the exception of the Sell Your Item form.
Problems with listing were still being reported on the OAI chat
boards as of 22:30 PT, though eBay reported the problem fixed
as of 22:15 PT. If you feel your auctions were negatively
impacted by any of these problems, email a request for a
refund to bill-@e...

Kudos go to eBay for accidentally removing outage and problem
reports from the announcement board, and then reposting them
when they realized the postings were gone. We noticed.

eBay has added and reorganized some categories.
They have changed Collectibles: Writing Instruments: Pens into
General; Ball Point; Floaty; and Fountain. There are new Button
categories in Everything Else, Sewing, Buttons. Watches are now
in Jewelry, Gemstones, Watches, and they have added Restaurant
Ware to Pottery & Glass. They have also separated N from Z in
Collectibles: RR Models, Trains: Scales to see N and Z separately.

Amazon Auctions is having problems with erroneously reporting
Reserve auctions as being won by a bidder even when the reserve
has NOT been met. Sellers might want to post something in their
auction description about this, in an effort to avoid
misunderstandings with their buyers.
Amazon has also changed their payment to sellers system. They
are now making payments every two weeks, but are allowing
sellers to log in and request immediate disbursement at any time.
Look under payment accounts summary for more info.

PayPal has had a rough week. They installed new equipment which
caused ongoing site problems, outages and inability to access the
site. The site appears to be up and functioning again today.

They have also opened a Customer Service Center in Omaha,
Nebraska. They have hired more than 200 new representatives to
assist with questions or comments. One must wonder as to the
experience level of an all new staff, but from no service to some
service is still an improvement. PayPal won a Webby award for
best finance site, and the parent company X.Com has just received
100 mil in venture capital investments, and was named by Red
Herring as one of the top 50 privately owned companies. With
1mil plus current users of PayPal, it looks to be establishing
itself firmly amongst the new online financial institutions.
