The Auction Guild Notes for Wednesday 17 May 2000
Our efforts to get a TAG rep out to BidCon2000 have failed. We
were able to put most of the parts in place, but were denied press
credentials which would have covered the conference fees, because
the company running the conference felt they had "enough" press
coverage. This was despite us being sponsored by an analog
newspaper with a circulation of 140,000 in exchange for TAG
providing coverage of the conference for the newspaper also.
Maybe next time...

eBay's Billpoint is paying listing fees for all listings on Thurs
18May 00:00:00 PT to 23:59:59 PT. Register with Billpoint
and include this payment method to receive your free listings.
Billpoint has also extended the free Visa transactions until 30 June.
When a winning bidder pays for an item through Billpoint with
their Visa card, all Billpoint fees are waived for that transaction.
This offer does not extend listing options, such as Gallery, Bold
Featured or Reserve fees. Those fees will still apply, as will

Another round of unsolicited commercial e-mails from a third party
pretending to be eBay employees are floating around. Practice the
following safety tips whenever you get SPAM.
1. Never give out your credit card information via email, or to
ANYONE, via ANY method, unless you initiated the transaction.
2. Do not give out your password unless it is to a trusted third
party, is required to use their services (The OAI seller tool
sites come to mind), and only if you have initiated the activity.
3. Change your password on a regular basis. To change your

The rumors continue about a decision on eBay and Meta Search
Engines. The latest is that a ruling by the DOJ will soon be
released in regards to eBay banning Meta searches.
We will report the info as soon as it becomes available.
While trying to track down this info, we found these bits of
interesting info
1. In its annual Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)filing
on 15 May says that it expects costs to go up this year as it spends
more to market its brand and get more users. Sales and marketing
expenses this year will rise due to costs related to strategic
alliances with AOL, Walt Disney Co.'s Go.com and Autotrader.com.
TAGs comment on this is that all the companies that take sales away
from the individual sellers will probably also cost us more in fees
and inconveniences to support.
2. eBay is going to stay with their Sun Severs despite past problems.
Sun and eBay didn't disclose the terms of the deal as to how much
the contract is worth or how long it will last. "I can say that we
made money on it," says Sun's van Aman.
3. British Internet auction house QXL.com has agreed to purchase
Germany's Ricardo.de in a stock swap worth 1.1 billion euros
($1 billion), creating Europe's biggest Internet auctioneer.
4. There were approx $206 million in online auction sales in April
with a total online sales estimate of 2.6 billion for the month.
U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray and Harris InteractiveInc conducted
the poll. They estimate 73.4 million people browsed the net,
Amazon.com accounted for 17.7 percent; eBay, 13.5 percent.
Third- place CDNow Inc., had 5 percent.
5. Marc Andreessen, a co-founder of Netscape filed with the
SEC to sell 11,097 common shares of eBay stock.
These tidbits were gleaned from CNET, Bloomberg, Gomez, Red
Herring and other news agencies.

eBay had approx 4 hours of indexing problems, and the listings are
running about four hours behind as of the repair of the problems
at 22:28 on 17 May.

Don't forget to participate in the eBay WATCH feature survey.
