**********HAPPY VALENTINES DAY**********

eBay was down for a short time tonight from approx 20:22 PT 14 Feb
to approx 20:40 PT according to the postings on the chat boards
(though eBay claims 20:29 PT).

eBay, in response to the denial of use attacks is working with law
enforcement to try to track down the perpetrators. They will monitor
their site to attempt to counteract the ill effects of future attacks.

eBay users receiving unsolicited commercial e-mail from a third party,
requesting credit card information and directing the recipient to submit
credit card information to a third-party web site that represents itself
as eBay.

eBay has heard from users that the users have received SPAM from a third
party, requesting credit card info and passwords. eBay urges users to
not be tricked by these ploys. TAG has added to eBays tips and we
recommend the following:

1. Do not ever give out your credit card information unless you
initiate the contact. eBay (or any other legitimate organization)
will NEVER request your credit card information via e-mail or through
a “pop up” screen or window on their site.

2. Do not give out your password, except when dealing with a trusted
service provider, who needs it to provide services to other auction
sites. Make sure the site is legitimate, and has a published policy
as to how they will protect your password information.

Giving out your password may compromise the security of your eBay
account. eBay and TAG wholeheartedly encourages users to change
passwords on a regular basis. To change your eBay password, go to:
http://pages.ebay.com/services/myebay/selectpass.html

In this particular case eBay users had received directions to go to
a third party site presenting itself as being eBay, and give their info.
eBays investigations team took action to fix this problem and recommend
the following: IN THE FUTURE
Should you ever receive an unsolicited commercial e-mail from a third
party, requesting credit card information or directing you to submit
credit card information to a third-party web site, please:
1. Never respond to those emails!
2. Notify eBay immediately!

Each day, eBay runs several indexing cycles for Search. These indexing
cycles capture new information, such as new listings, bids, etc.
Maintenance downtimes, means that the indexing cycles have to catch up
later in the day after the maintenance is done. They did maintenance on
description search on Fri 11 Feb, resulting in indexing cycles for
description search being behind by 24 hours for the next few following
days. Title search continued to function.

Personal Shopper is having intermittent outages, as of 1800 PT 14 Feb.
If it does not work when you try it, eBay recommends waiting a few
minutes and trying again.

Has eBay added eTrade to its partner list? Wonder what the eBay cut is
on this one! There is an offer on the main eBay page to get the value
of one share of eBay stock if you open an eTrade stock account. The
rules, taken from the link are:
Your cash credit will be the closing price of eBay shares on the Friday
after your application is approved by E*TRADE. Allow up to 8 weeks to
receive the credit. You must be a new E*TRADE customer residing in the
U.S. This offer not valid for IRA, retirement, business or investment
club accounts. There is a limit of one non-transferable award per
account and one account per person. Your E*TRADE account must remain
open and the minimum initial balance maintained (less trading losses, if
any)for at least six months. E*TRADE reserves the right to terminate
this offer at any time. This offer is not valid with any other E*TRADE
offer. Other terms apply. Account holders participating in this offer
will not receive actual eBay shares.
